How to Wash Wool Felt Slippers Without Ruining Them
Wool felt slippers are warm, soft and wonderfully cosy — right up until you wonder how on earth to clean them without turning them into doll-sized felt lumps. Wool can shrink and felt further if you treat it roughly, but with the right method it washes up beautifully. Here's how to wash wool slippers — by hand or in the machine — and keep them soft, fresh and the right size.
First: why wool needs special care
Wool fibres have microscopic scales. Heat, agitation and sudden temperature changes make those scales lock together — that's felting, and it's what shrinks and stiffens wool. So the whole game is simple: keep it gentle, keep it cool, and don't scrub. Do that and your slippers will last for years.
Before you start, check the label. Our wool-lined felt slippers are machine-washable on a wool cycle, but always follow the specific care instructions for your pair.
The gentle method: hand washing (safest)
Hand washing is the lowest-risk way to clean wool slippers.
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water — never hot. Aim for around body temperature.
- Add a little wool-safe detergent (a wool wash or mild soap). Avoid regular biological detergents, which contain enzymes that damage wool.
- Swish, don't scrub. Gently press and squeeze the water through the felt. Spot-treat marks by dabbing, not rubbing.
- Rinse in water of the same temperature. A sudden change from warm to cold can shock the fibres and cause felting.
- Press out water gently. Squeeze — never wring or twist.
Machine washing (only if the label allows)
If your slippers are labelled machine-washable, follow these rules exactly:
- Use the wool or hand-wash cycle at 30°C with a moderate or low spin.
- Place the slippers in a mesh wash bag or a pillowcase to protect them from agitation.
- Use a wool-specific detergent — no bleach, no fabric softener.
- Wash them on their own or with other gentle wool items, not with heavy or abrasive laundry.
How to dry wool slippers (this is where they get ruined)
Drying wrong undoes all your careful washing. Never use a tumble dryer, radiator, underfloor heating or direct sun — concentrated heat is exactly what felts and shrinks wool.
- Reshape them by hand while damp so they dry in the right form.
- Stuff them with a towel or newspaper to hold their shape and absorb moisture.
- Air dry at room temperature, away from any heat source. It may take a day or two — that's normal and worth it.
Keeping them fresh between washes
Wool is naturally odour-resistant, so you'll rarely need a full wash. Between times:
- Air them out regularly — pop them somewhere ventilated overnight.
- Freshen by sprinkling a little bicarbonate of soda inside, leaving it overnight, then shaking it out.
- De-fuzz any pilling with a fabric shaver or a gentle pass of a razor — this is normal for wool and doesn't mean they're wearing out.
Caring for kids' wool slippers
Children's slippers see more spills and scuffs, so the same gentle approach applies — just more often. Our KAKU kids' felt slippers are machine-washable on a wool cycle; pop them in a wash bag, wash cool, and air dry away from the radiator.
Frequently asked questions
Can you machine wash wool slippers? Only if the care label says so. If it does, use the wool cycle at 30°C with a low spin, put them in a mesh bag, and use wool-safe detergent. When in doubt, hand wash.
How do you wash wool slippers without shrinking them? Keep the water lukewarm (never hot), don't scrub or wring, rinse at the same temperature, and air dry away from heat. Heat and agitation are what cause shrinking.
Why are my wool slippers getting fuzzy? Light pilling is normal for natural wool. Remove it gently with a fabric shaver or razor — it doesn't affect warmth or durability.
How do I get rid of odour in wool slippers? Air them out regularly and sprinkle bicarbonate of soda inside overnight, then shake it out. Wool is naturally odour-resistant, so this is usually enough between washes.
