What Is Gold Vermeil? Vermeil vs Plated vs Filled

"Gold vermeil," "gold-plated," "gold-filled" — they sound interchangeable and they absolutely aren't. The difference decides how long the gold lasts and what you're paying for. Here's a plain-English guide to gold vermeil and how it compares.

What is gold vermeil?

Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a specific, regulated standard. To be called vermeil, a piece must have a sterling silver base coated in gold that is at least 10k (often higher, like 18k or 24k) and at least 2.5 microns thick. Both conditions matter: silver underneath, and a genuinely thick gold layer.

That combination is why vermeil is the quality choice for gold-look jewellery — you get a solid precious-metal base and a gold layer thick enough to last for years of careful wear.

Vermeil vs gold-plated

Gold-plated just means a layer of gold over a base metal — with no minimum thickness and no requirement for what's underneath. The base is often brass or copper, and the gold layer can be a fraction of a micron. It looks the same on day one but wears through far faster, and if the base is a reactive metal it can irritate sensitive skin. All vermeil is gold-plated in the technical sense, but very little gold-plating meets the vermeil standard.

Vermeil vs gold-filled

Gold-filled is a different construction: a thick layer of gold (by law, at least 5% of the item's weight) mechanically bonded to a base core under heat and pressure. It's very durable — often more hard-wearing than vermeil — but the base is usually brass, not silver. Some of our pieces use gold-filled chains for exactly this durability.

Which should you choose?

  • Want a precious-metal base and lasting gold look → vermeil (sterling silver + thick gold).
  • Want maximum durability on a chain you'll wear hard → gold-filled.
  • Budget piece for occasional wear → gold-plated, accepting it won't last as long.
  • Sensitive skin → vermeil or gold-filled over a known base beat cheap plating — see our guide to hypoallergenic jewellery.

How to make gold vermeil last

The gold layer is thick but not invincible — abrasion is what wears it. Take vermeil off before showering, swimming and sport; keep perfume and lotion away from it; store it separately so it doesn't rub other pieces; and clean it gently with only warm soapy water and a soft cloth — never polishing cloths or abrasives, which strip gold. The same principles that keep silver from tarnishing apply here.

Frequently asked questions

Is gold vermeil real gold? Yes — it's a real gold layer (at least 10k, at least 2.5 microns) over solid sterling silver. It's a regulated standard, unlike generic "gold-plated."

Does gold vermeil wear off? Over time and with abrasion, yes — but far more slowly than thin gold-plating. Gentle care and keeping it away from friction, chemicals and water extends its life for years.

Is vermeil or gold-filled better? Vermeil has a precious-metal (silver) base; gold-filled is usually more durable but on a brass core. Both far outlast standard gold-plating.
