How Long Do Handmade Boots Last? A Realistic Answer

“Buy it for life” is easy to say. So how long do handmade boots actually last? The honest answer is that it depends on three things — construction, use and care — and only one of those is decided at the point of sale.

A realistic lifespan

Well-made leather boots, worn regularly and looked after, typically last five to ten years, and often longer if they can be resoled. Boots worn occasionally can last considerably longer. By contrast, cheap glued-sole boots worn daily often fail within a year or two — usually at the sole, not the upper.

What determines it

Construction. The single biggest factor. Stitched or direct-moulded soles hugely outlast glued ones, and resoleable boots can be renewed rather than replaced when the tread wears out.

Leather grade. Full-grain leather lasts far longer than coated lower grades, which crack and peel — see our guide to leather grades.

How hard you wear them. Daily construction-site use is a different life from weekend wear. Rotating between two pairs roughly doubles the life of both, because leather needs time to dry out between wears.

Care. The part you control. Conditioning, drying properly and dealing with winter salt make an enormous difference.

What usually fails first

In order: the outsole tread (replaceable on resoleable boots), the heel counter if you crush it putting boots on without unlacing, and stitching at flex points, which a cobbler can usually restitch. Notice that on a well-made boot, most failures are repairs rather than write-offs.
