How to Pack Shoes for Travel

Shoes are the most awkward thing in any suitcase — bulky, oddly shaped, and capable of ruining everything else they touch. A little method saves space and keeps both your shoes and your clothes in good condition.

Clean them first

Obvious, routinely skipped. Packing dirty shoes puts road grit and salt against your clothes, and traps that grime against the leather for the whole trip — where salt keeps drawing moisture out. A two-minute brush and wipe before packing is worth it.

Use the space inside them

Shoes are containers. Fill them with socks, underwear or chargers — it uses dead space and helps the shoe hold its shape under the weight of everything else. This is the single biggest space saving in most suitcases.

Bag them separately

Use breathable cotton shoe bags rather than plastic. Plastic traps moisture against leather for the duration of the trip, which is how shoes arrive smelling musty or, on a long trip, growing mould. A cotton bag keeps dirt off your clothes while letting the leather breathe — the same principle as our storage guide. A pillowcase works in a pinch.

Where to put them

Pack shoes soles-down along the bottom edge of the case, near the wheels, with clothes above. They're the heaviest items and belong at the bottom when the case stands upright. Alternate them heel-to-toe to interlock and save space.

Wear the bulkiest pair

The oldest trick and still the best. Boots take up enormous case space — wear them on the plane and pack the lighter shoes. Slip-on styles make security easier.

How many pairs?

Most people overpack footwear. Two or three pairs cover almost any trip: something comfortable for walking, something smarter, and sandals or slippers depending on the season. It's essentially the capsule wardrobe logic applied to a suitcase.

On arrival

Unpack shoes promptly rather than leaving them compressed in the case, and let them air. If they've been in a bag for a long flight, a few hours out of the bag restores them.

Coming home

Pack worn shoes in a separate bag from clean clothes, and when you get home, clean and condition before storing — particularly after beach trips, since salt and sand are hard on leather. Our sandal-care guide covers the details.
