Seasonal Leather Care: What to Do and When
Leather faces opposite problems in summer and winter, and treating it the same all year is why boots crack and sandals stiffen. Here's a seasonal leather-care calendar — what to do, and when.
The two enemies
In winter, it's moisture and road salt: salt draws oils out of leather and leaves it brittle. In summer, it's heat and UV: sun dries leather and fades colour, and sweat degrades linings and footbeds. Different problems, different responses.
Autumn: prepare before you need to
The most valuable job of the year. Before the wet season starts, clean and condition your boots, then waterproof them — wax or cream for smooth leather, a dedicated spray for suede and nubuck. Our waterproofing guide covers the method. Doing this in October prevents the damage you'd otherwise be repairing in February.
Winter: little and often
- Wipe off salt the same day. This is the single highest-value habit of the season — see our salt-stain guide.
- Dry properly — room temperature, stuffed with newspaper, never on a radiator.
- Condition more often, since heated indoor air is drying.
- Re-apply waterproofing every few weeks of heavy wear.
- Rotate pairs so each dries fully.
Spring: reset
Deep-clean winter boots, remove any remaining salt residue, condition thoroughly, and store them properly for the season — clean, shaped, and in something breathable. Our guide to storing shoes between seasons covers it. This is also the moment to book a resole if the tread went over winter; see when to resole.
Summer: sun and sweat
Keep leather out of direct sun — no baking on windowsills or car dashboards, which dries and fades it. Sandals need their own routine because bare feet mean sweat goes straight into the footbed: air them between wears, rotate pairs, and condition the straps, as covered in our sandal-care guide.
A simple year at a glance
- Autumn: clean, condition, waterproof.
- Winter: wipe salt daily, dry slowly, condition often, re-waterproof.
- Spring: deep-clean, condition, store, resole if needed.
- Summer: keep out of sun, air sandals, condition straps.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I condition leather shoes? Every few weeks in winter when heated air dries them faster, and whenever the leather looks dull. Less often in mild, humid conditions.
When should I waterproof my boots? In autumn before the wet season, then top up every few weeks of heavy use through winter.
Does sun really damage leather? Yes — UV dries leather and fades colour. Avoid leaving shoes in direct sunlight or a hot car.
