Vegetable-Tanned Leather — Why It Matters
Most leather goods are chrome-tanned, a fast industrial process using chromium salts. Vegetable tanning takes weeks, uses plant-based tannins, and produces leather that is firmer, denser, more resistant to wear, and able to develop a patina over time rather than degrading from the surface. Scratches and marks absorb in and become part of the material's character — chrome-tanned leather shows wear as damage, vegetable-tanned leather shows wear as history. This is not a bag you replace; it's a bag you keep.

Each tote is made after you order it, with production taking 3–7 days before shipping — made by hand for you, not pulled from a warehouse shelf, and marked inside with the maker's name. It's designed under Stella Soomlais's Round 2 circular system: parts are designed to be repaired or replaced rather than discarding the whole bag, and larger leather offcuts become smaller accessories while smaller pieces are reused in the workshop, keeping waste to a minimum.

Caring for Vegetable-Tanned Leather
Don't overpack — leather has memory, so fill it rather than stuff it. Some sunlight deepens the patina, but prolonged direct sun causes uneven colour change, so store out of direct sun. If it gets wet, let it dry naturally at room temperature — never use a radiator, heater or hair dryer. Keep alcohol and hand sanitiser away from the surface, as they leave permanent marks. For surface marks, use a damp cloth with mild soap (no hot water), and an occasional leather conditioner will extend its life significantly. With proper care, this bag will look better at ten years than on day one.

How to care for waterproof nubuck boots with membrane lining?
Proper care extends the lifespan and keeps your boots looking good. Avoid wearing the same pair of boots on consecutive days. Always dry and clean them thoroughly before wearing them again. When putting on the boots, fasten all closures (buckles, laces, Velcro, etc.) properly.
After purchase and before first use, perform basic care using products meant for nubuck leather. Depending on the weather, apply water-repellent sprays as well. Nubuck care products are available at well-stocked shoe stores.
Store boots in a dry, well-ventilated place. Do not dry them near heat sources.
Clean your boots daily from dust and mud, and brush the sole edges and tread. Never wash boots in a washing machine or with lots of water. Use nubuck-specific products (ask at shoe stores) or a damp cloth. Use shoe deodorant if needed.
Avoid getting sharp objects inside the boots – they can damage the membrane lining.

The leather pull loop at the back of the high and low Aviator boots is decorative and not meant for pulling on the boots. A broken pull loop is not covered under warranty. If it does break, we can repair it as a paid service.
